“Investing in a liveable planet for all”

COP 28 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai in 2023 was the biggest of it’s kind. More than 150 heads of state and governments were among the representatives of national delegations, civil society,  business, Indigenous Peoples, youth, philanthropy and international organisations.

It marked the first “Global Stocktake” of the world’s efforts to address Climate Change under the Paris Agreement.

Having shown that progress has been too slow across all areas of Climate action:

  • reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions
  • strengthening resilience to a changing climate
  • getting financial and technical support to vulnerable nations

countries responded with a decision to accelerate action by 2030. This includes a call for all governments to speed up the transition away from fossil fuels and to renewable such as wind and solar power.

Other key agreements included:

  • new funding for loss and damage
  • linking climate action with nature conservation
  • ramping up practical climate solutions

COP 29

The aim is to establish a new Climate Finance Goal. COP 29 has become known as the Finance COP. Representatives from all countries will come together to set a new:

Global Finance Target replacing that set in 2009 where developed nations agreed to provide 100 billion dollars by 2020.

The reality is that developing nations financial needs far outstrip what is currently going to them.

Another key aim is for countries to signal their intent to:

  • set more ambitious emissions reduction targets next year
  • strengthen action on adaptation
  • demonstrate progress on previous targets
  • commit more financial and other support to countries grappling with loss and damage from climate impacts

Overall the focus will be on:

  1. A new Global Finance Goal
  2. Stronger National Climate Commitments (NDC’s)
  3. Progress on existing commitments on cities, energy food and forests

A clear process for funding and response to loss and damage

Exciting new appointment for kevin foster

Kevin will be the Green representative on the Overview and Scrutiny Committee of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Mayoral Authority. Kevin explains, “Basically I will be keeping my eye on what the Mayor is doing and will be able to question decisions directly to him”

Catterick garrison Town Centre Scheme

Kevin looks at the progress on-site

The plans for the Coronation Park and Shute Road area include enhanced play spaces, accessible routes to the town centre and an overhaul of footpaths and cycleways.

Artwork will be appearing on the hoardings of the new development after children and young people from around Catterick produced imaginative drawings, designs and poetry for them over the summer months.

Green Party Councillor Kevin Foster, (Hipswell and Colburn), North Yorkshire Council’s member champion for the armed forces, talked with local children about what they would like to see in the park. Kevin said, “It was really great to hear the children’s views on what they would like to see in the park and interact with them. They were excited about the development and their artwork was really thought-provoking.It is our aim to have a fantastic development that will benefit the children and indeed their children for years to come.”

Sustainable Swaledale is a community group aiming to make Swaledale and Arkengarthdale the most environmentally sustainable of the Yorkshire Dales.

Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust website

Only 14% of rivers in the UK are in a state of good ecological health! In North Yorkshire about 18% of Rivers achieve this status.

The Trust’s mission:

  • To enhance and protect the Rivers Swale, Ure, Nidd, Warfe and Ouse by delivering practical and educational projects,  engaging with communities and working in partnership

Their work focuses on:

  • addressing pollution
  • mitigating Climate Change
  • conserving biodiversity

There are plans to collaborate with the Save our Swale group by using the date SOS collect.

Small Steps

  • Download the INNS Mapper to record sitings, survey results and management activities
  • Participate in citizen science activities such as those organised by SOS or Water Blitz events held biannually (next event in Spring 2025)

Save Our Swale https://saveourswale.co.uk/

SOS campaigns for better, safer water quality in then River Swale

Volunteers carry out regular water sampling of the river. August samples downstream of the Richmond Sewage Treatment Works revealed the highest ever level of coliform bacteria, which indicate sewage pollution. Yorkshire Water, which was fined £4.7 million by OFWAT for failing to manage its sewage works, has been contacted to ask if the works is compliant

SOS has 12 months of water monitoring data and, as DEFRA has deferred all applications for bathing water Status, SOS has decided to self-designate areas used for paddling and swimming, advising users of any risks. The signs are being designed now.

Here is one of the SOS volunteers carrying out water sampling in September 2024

The 2024 General election was the first one held under the new constituency boundaries.and it was conducted in a very different political environment to 2019. The eight 2019 constituencies became nine with boundary changes affecting almost every constituency.

Across the region the Green Party made good progress. We stood a candidate in every seat and won 5.9% of the vote, which was an improvement on 2019 when we stood 5 candidates and gained 2.6%. Nationally the Green Party achieved increased vote share from 2.7% in 2019 to 6.7% in 2024. The best Green result in our region was achieved by Lars Kramm in York Central with 12% vote share.

Unfortunately the areas transferred out of our constituency had a strong Green vote, so we faced an uphill battle against a big field of candidates in the new constituency of Richmond and Northallerton. The BBC analysis shows that Kevin Foster, our candidate, gained 4.2% vote share, which is an increase of 0.4% after taking boundary changes into account.

Kevin was also the Green Party candidate in the election for Mayor of York and North Yorkshire combined authority. He fought a very active campaign with many press and media interviews and hustings and achieved a very creditable vote share of 8%.
