Reflections on Green results in the 2024 mayoral and general elections in york and north yorkshire

The 2024 General election was the first one held under the new constituency boundaries.and it was conducted in a very different political environment to 2019. The eight 2019 constituencies became nine with boundary changes affecting almost every constituency.

Across the region the Green Party made good progress. We stood a candidate in every seat and won 5.9% of the vote, which was an improvement on 2019 when we stood 5 candidates and gained 2.6%. Nationally the Green Party achieved increased vote share from 2.7% in 2019 to 6.7% in 2024. The best Green result in our region was achieved by Lars Kramm in York Central with 12% vote share.

Unfortunately the areas transferred out of our constituency had a strong Green vote, so we faced an uphill battle against a big field of candidates in the new constituency of Richmond and Northallerton. The BBC analysis shows that Kevin Foster, our candidate, gained 4.2% vote share, which is an increase of 0.4% after taking boundary changes into account.

Kevin was also the Green Party candidate in the election for Mayor of York and North Yorkshire combined authority. He fought a very active campaign with many press and media interviews and hustings and achieved a very creditable vote share of 8%.
